Not in ? Every province has its own set of regulations, so make sure you review the auto insurance options in your region. Select your location.

There are mandatory coverages required by law for all registered vehicles that are used on public roads. In Québec, there are two auto insurance plans to consider, and mandatory coverages apply under each plan.

Private Plan

This is provided by private auto insurance companies and covers:

  • Damage to your vehicle
  • Civil liability: In the event you are held responsible for causing harm to others including property damage and bodily injury

Accident Benefits may be increased from the amounts provided by SAAQ. Talk to your broker to find out more.

Public Plan

This is provided by the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) and covers your bodily injuries arising from an automobile accident.

In addition to your licensed insurance broker, more information about mandatory auto coverage in Québec can be found on the Insurance Bureau of Canada website.

Depending on your unique auto coverage needs, you have options. We recommend discussing these with your insurance broker to arrange coverage best suited to your needs.

“All Perils” Coverage

This is the most complete option, and combines Coverage against perils of Collision and Upset (Protection 2) and Coverage against perils other than Collision and Upset (Protection 3).

Coverage against perils of Collision and Upset

Provides coverage if your vehicle is damaged in a collision with another vehicle or object, or if the vehicle is overturned (known as “Upset”).

Coverage against perils other than Collision and Upset

Provides coverage if your vehicle is damagedfor any reason other than Collision or Upset. This coverage expands to the Coverage against specified perils and may also provide coverage for:

  • Falling or flying objects
  • Vandalism
Coverage against specific perils

This type of coverage lists the specific events that are covered if damage to your vehicle occurs. Common events that may be included in this type of policy include:

  • Fire
  • Theft or attempted theft
  • Lightning
  • Windstorm / hail
  • Explosion
  • Rising water

Most auto insurance policies allow you to customize coverage for your specific needs. Below you'll find common policy addition options available in Québec (also referred to as "policy endorsements" or "policy change forms"), which you can discuss with your broker.

Is your vehicle unusable after an accident?

Travel Expenses pay for your rental vehicle or public transportation in the event you are unable to drive yours because of an accident or insurable incident. We provide a variety of coverage limits to choose from and have recently introduced incentives to rent an electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle. Your broker will be able to assist you in selecting the proper coverage for your specific needs.

Are you likely to borrow or rent a vehicle?

Civil Liability for Physical Damage to a Non-Owned Vehicle protects you while driving any vehicle that you do not own (with the owner's permission). This may include borrowing a vehicle from a friend or renting a vehicle while on vacation.

Note: This does not apply to vehicles owned by people that live in your household. Your broker will be able to explain if this coverage is right for you.

Do you own a brand new vehicle?

Changes to Indemnity extends your auto coverage by protecting you in the event your new vehicle is damaged or written off. This coverage extension ensures that you will receive the amount that you paid or your new vehicle at the time of purchase, with no deduction for depreciation. Your broker will be able to explain if this coverage is right for you.
