FAQ

New Wawanesa Drive Change app

Why is there a new Drive Change app?

The new and improved Drive Change app is easier to use and provides you with better insights into your driving behaviour.

I already have the Drive Change app on my smartphone, do I need to switch to the new app?

Yes. To stay in the program and keep your Drive Change auto insurance discount, you must activate the new app on your smartphone before September 30, 2025. The old app will be retired and no longer available to Drive Change members starting October 1, 2025. See next question for details about how to get and activate the new app.

How do I get the new Drive Change app?

Depending on your smartphone’s operating system, you may automatically receive the new Drive Change app as an update from the Apple App Store or Google Play. When you open the new app, you’ll need to re-register your account using the same email address you used for the previous app.

If you don’t automatically receive the app update, follow these easy steps to download and activate the new app:

  • Download the new app to your smartphone.

Download on the App Store Get it on Google Play

  • Once you’ve downloaded the app, click “Get Started” to re-register your account using the same email address you used for the previous app, and create a new password.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to always allow the app to record your driving trips.
Can the new app be installed on any smartphone?

The Drive Change app is supported on most modern iOS and Android smartphones as long as they’re running one of the last three major operating system updates.

Why do I have to reactivate my Drive Change account if I received the new app as an update?

Reactivating your account ensures we can continue monitoring your driving behavior and participation in the Drive Change program. Using the app is a program requirement and allows us to continue offering a discount on your auto insurance.

Will my driving score and Drive Change discount stay the same after activating the new app?

You may notice a drop in your driving score, compared to the old app, because we’ve updated the score influences. But don’t worry, even if your score has changed, your insurance discount has stayed the same. See next question for details about the six score influence areas.

How is my driving score measured in the new app?

After each trip you take, your driving will be scored using six influence areas:

  • Smooth driving: How smoothly you accelerate, brake, and corner.
  • Mobile use: Time spent using your phone while driving.
  • Road risk: Road type and safety level (example: urban vs. highway).
  • Fatigue: Measures trip duration. After two hours of driving, fatigue can set in.
  • Speed: How safely your speed compares to others on the road.
  • Time of day: Considers the time of your trip. Nighttime driving is riskier.

As a driver, you have full control over your speed, smooth driving, mobile use – these areas have the biggest impact on your score.

Where did the Rewards tab go?

Rewards points are no longer part of the Drive Change program. August 31, 2025, was the last day to redeem any rewards points in the old app. The value of unredeemed points was donated to the Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF), a charitable road safety research institute based in Ottawa. We communicated this change to all Drive Change members throughout the summer.

Will the new app drain my phone’s battery?

The app functions like a GPS and battery usage depends on the number and length of your trips. When not recording a trip, the app runs in the background to minimize battery drain. Also, the app will automatically pause recording trips to conserve your battery if it’s low. To adjust these app settings, click on More > Preferences > Battery Conservation.

Does the new app track me when I’m a passenger in a vehicle?

Yes. All trips are recorded, but only trips where you were driving will impact your driving score and insurance discount. After each trip, the Drive Change app will allow you to select your role as the driver or passenger. If you were taking public transit or another type of transportation, select “passenger” as your role. You have 72 hours to tag your trip.

What happens if I don’t activate the new Drive Change app?

If you don’t download and activate the new app by September 30, 2025, you will be unenrolled from the Drive Change program and lose any associated insurance discount on October 1, 2025. You will keep your auto insurance coverage and receive updated policy documents.
