Pick a Destination

  • Research the safety of your preferred destinations — will you be at risk of pickpockets, are COVID-19 rates at a safe level for visiting?
  • If you’re meeting up with family, choose a place where you’ll be able to spend time together while practicing safe social distancing.
  • Avoid staying at a family member’s house if there’s not enough space to spread out.
  • Consider getting a COVID test before you hit the road. Give yourself enough time to get your test results before you leave on your trip. Be sure to stay home while waiting for your test results to lower your risk of bringing the virus on your road-trip.

Check Local Rules

  • Check local laws and regulations of the area you plan to visit, such as parking guidelines or tire chain laws.
  • Make sure to read up on local COVID-19 restrictions or guidelines, such as:
    • Does the area require masks or face coverings?
    • What is currently open (restaurants, tourist attractions, etc.)? Are there special requirements, like outdoor-only dining?
    • Is there a limit on the size of gatherings?

Plan Your Route

  • You should always try to plan a road-trip route in advance.
  • Give your planned route to family or friends before you leave, including how long you expect to be on the road.
  • This gives them a better idea of where to look for you if you don’t reach your destination on time or get into trouble on the road.

Get a Vehicle Checkup

  • You should inspect your vehicle before your trip, even if you follow a regular maintenance schedule.
  • Be sure that the following are in good condition and working properly:
  • Tire pressure and tread
  • Interior and exterior lights
  • Heating and cooling
  • Wiper blades
  • Fluid levels
  • Get your car serviced before your trip — if it needs an oil change, now is the time to do it!

Create a Roadside Emergency Kit

  • Be ready for unexpected car troubles with an emergency kit, including:
    • Flashlight and extra batteries
    • Cell phone battery pack and charging cables
    • First aid kit
    • Road flares and safety flags
    • Tool kit with duct tape and work gloves
    • Jumper cables
    • Tire gauge and tire changing kit
    • Emergency blanket
    • Paper towels
    • Clean drinking water and non-perishable food

Pack Holiday Road-Trip Essentials

  • Holiday travel could be busy, so be prepared for traffic.
  • Have snacks, drinks and entertainment ready to go:
    • Come up with a few holiday road-trip games, such as holiday-themed I Spy.
    • Use non-leaking containers with straws to avoid messes.
    • Designate one person to be in charge of passing out drinks and snacks.
  • If you’ll be traveling on wintery roads, pack safety gear like tire chains or tow straps to help you if you get stuck.

Don’t Forget the New Essentials

  • Traveling during COVID might require extra supplies, such as:
    • Hand sanitizer
    • Disinfecting wipes
    • Cleaning supplies
    • Extra masks or face coverings
    • Additional snacks and drinks to avoid unnecessary stops
