Alberta Auto Insurance

In Alberta, you can meet your mandatory auto insurance requirements while customizing for your needs.

Not in ? Every province has its own set of regulations, so make sure you review the auto insurance options in your region. Select your location.

There are mandatory coverages required by law for all registered vehicles that are used on public roads. In Alberta, it is mandatory for vehicle owners and drivers to have Third Party Liability coverage for Bodily Injury and Property Damage and Accident Benefits coverage. "Third Party" refers to someone other than the insured (first party) or the insurer (second party).

Third Party Liability

This coverage protects you as the vehicle owner, along with drivers, in the event they negligently cause injury, death, or property damage to someone else (a third party).

Accident Benefits

This coverage ensures that certain medical treatment expenses are paid in the unfortunate event that vehicle owners/drivers are injured or killed.

Mandatory Coverages in Alberta
  • Protecting the vehicle owner or driver who negligently causes injury to a third party, which could include another driver or a pedestrian.
  • Protecting the vehicle owner or driver who negligently causes damage to property of a third party. For example, you could collide into a neighbour’s fence and cause damage.
  • Paying certain medical treatments of those injured or killed in an automobile accident.

What happens if you get into a collision with someone who doesn't have enough insurance to cover the cost of an injury that you, or your family member, sustained in the accident? What can you do to protect yourself and those closest to you?

Family Protection coverage is added to protect you and members of your household for bodily injury or death in the event of a vehicle accident with someone else who does not carry enough insurance to pay for your injuries — also known as an under-insured third party driver.

With this coverage, you will be able to claim the difference between the amount of coverage the other driver carries and the amount of coverage you have purchased on your own policy. This coverage is added automatically to all vehicles that carry third party liability and accident benefits.
