It's spring and the weather is fine for yard and home maintenance and all sorts of activities. Spring is the time of the year to repair winter's damage and take care of yourself and your family, so that you can enjoy the sunshine. Observe safety sense while fixing up things around the home and yard.

            Home Cleaning:
  • Clear all clutter away from stoves.
  • Never store cleaning supplies in the same place as food items.
  • Read the labels on home cleaners; they contain many dangerous substances. Some will burn your skin or eyes when splashed, others, such as aerosol spray cans, will explode when punctured or heated, and can be harmful when inhaled.
  • Wear protective gloves and goggles when required.

Fitness:

  • Be sure you are in good physical condition.
  • Have a medical check-up and discuss any fitness program with your doctor.
  • Get the necessary instructions and follow them closely.
  • Take time to warm up gradually before any activity.
  • Practice your type of fitness program in proper locations.
  • Use proper equipment and personal protective equipment that is in good condition and properly maintained.

Skateboards:

  • Keep skateboards properly maintained.
  • Wear protective safety equipment including leather gloves, elbow/knee pads, long pants and helmets.
  • Skate in a safe place away from road traffic.
  • Stay away from steep hills.
  • Never lend your skateboard to a beginner.

Fishing:

  • Be careful when handling fish - they have teeth too.
  • Have a personal flotation device for every person on the boat.
  • In swift water, have a good anchor for use in an emergency.
  • File a float plan - let someone know where you are going.
  • Stand in boats only when it is absolutely necessary.
  • Make sure you know how to cast properly; clumsy casting can hook and injure others.

Lawn Care and Gardening:

  • Clean all debris - rocks, twigs, wires and toys from the lawn before using a power mower.
  • Wear safety shoes.
  • Protect your eyes.
  • Take extra care when mowing on sloping ground - you have less control.
  • Never refuel your power mower when the engine is hot.
  • Control electrical equipment cords.
  • Make sure outdoor electrical equipment is properly grounded or double insulated.
  • Keep children and pets away while you are mowing or trimming.
  • When lifting, bend your knees and use your leg muscles.
