It's great to see families heading off each spring to visit friends and relatives, to explore new areas or to enjoy warmer weather. To best take advantage of this opportunity, you should plan well ahead of time, budget carefully and travel safely.

            Car Travel:
  • Always wear seat belts in the car; they keep you secured during a crash and reduce the severity of injury.
  • Seat belts must be properly fitted and secured snugly to be effective.
  • Install child-restraint systems according to manufacturer's instructions.
  • Ensure that restraint harnesses and belts are properly placed on the child.

Hotel Fires:

  • Upon arrival of your hotel room, plan an escape route to the outside.
  • Survey your room to determine if it would be safe to stay in it if trapped by a fire, e.g., look for a balcony.
  • Carry a portable smoke detector with you when traveling.
  • Never smoke in bed.
  • Follow your safety plans even if you think it is a false alarm.

Highway Travel:

  • Maintain a safe following distance, a minimum of two seconds behind the vehicle in front.
  • Take scheduled rest breaks to prevent highway hypnosis and drowsiness.
  • Do not drive in other vehicles' blind spots on multiple-lane highways.
  • Travel with the general flow of traffic; speeding will not save time.

Aircraft Travel:

  • Store large packages and luggage that might inhibit the evacuation of the plane.
  • Do not pack dangerous goods like camping gas, compressed air containers or fireworks; they are not allowed on planes.
  • Keep your seat belt on at all times even though air pockets and turbulence are rare.
  • Drink moderately.
  • In an emergency, leave all belongings behind and listen to the flight attendants.

Train Travel:

  • Do not open the vestibule door or stand on the steps or platform while a train is in motion.
  • Observe where the safety exits are located.
  • Stay in your seat; it offers the best protection in a crash.
  • Watch your step when getting off or on.
